MSTI

The Mississippi Summer Transportation Institute (MSTI) is a two to three week residential experience designed to introduce young people entering grades 9 and 10 from across the state of Mississippi to careers in the transportation industry, and how STEM plays a role in those careers.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration partner with public universities in Mississippi to offer the MSTI. MDOT and FHWA provide funding for the MSTI, as well as set up tours of various MDOT facilities, such as MDOT’s Materials Lab, where students get a firsthand look at the different career pathways offered by the transportation industry.

The MSTI also teaches students valuable lessons about driver safety, such as the importance of wearing seat belts and the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, from MDOT’s Safety Education Outreach Program.
